چکیده

Th is study examined downer dairy cows with concurrent fatty liver of diff erent degrees and evaluated the haematological values, the relationship and joint occurrence of fatty liver severity and haematology and compared the haematological values in the downer animals that fi nally died or cured. Blood and liver biopsy samples were obtained from 36 Holstein downer cows shortly aft er they became recumbent and before they were treated. Blood analysis included determination of haematocrit, haemoglobin, white blood, granular cell and lymphocytes count, and platelet number. Liver tissue was examined histologically and was classifi ed according to severity of fatty liver. Th e majority of downer cows had fatty liver. Concerning outcome, 9 of the 36 cows were fi nally cured and 27 were confi rmed dead by the deadline decided for cases’ follow up, which was the 7th day-in-milk. Th ere was a signifi cant association between clinical outcome (cured or died) and severity of fatty liver, while none of the haematological parameters showed any signifi cant diff erence between the cured vs. animals that died. Th e haematology of downer cows with concurrent fatty liver did not off er sound help in patient evaluation. Th ere was no strong correlation between blood parameters and liver triglyceride content or other liver diagnostic parameters. Neither haematological parameter showed any signifi cant diff erence between animals which fi nally either died or were cured.

Relevance of apolipoproteins in the development of fatty liver and fatty liver-related peripartum diseases in dairy cows.

Most metabolic diseases in dairy cows occur during the peripartum period and are suggested to be derived from fatty liver initially developed during the nonlactating stage. Fatty liver is induced by hepatic uptake of nonesterified fatty acids that are released in excess by adipose tissues attributable to negative energy balance. The fatty accumulation leads to impairment of lipoprotein metaboli...

Comparison of Various Indices of Energy Metabolism in Recumbent and Healthy Dairy Cows

BACKGROUND Downer cow syndrome (DCS) is often diagnosed in dairy cattle during the early post-partum period. The etiology of this condition is not completely understood, as it can be related to the energetic or electrolyte metabolism, as well as to infectious diseases or to trauma. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES The aim of this study is to compare energy metabolism and insulin sensitivity indices and ...

Hepatic triacylglycerols and serum non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) variations in indigenous water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) in the province of Khuzestan, Iran

Fatty liver is a metabolic disorder of dairy cows in early lactation, and approximately half of multi-parous dairy cows experience a moderate to severe fatty liver at calving. Since the occurrence of fatty liver in buffalo is not known, the aim of this study was to evaluate the hepatic content of triacylglycerols (TAG) and total lipids (TL), and the serum content of non-esterified fatty acids (...

Study on the effect of left displacement of abomasum (LDA) on serum minerals and biochemical changes in dairy cows

Minerals and some biochemical parameters determined from blood serum analyses in left displacement abomasum (LDA) affected and healthy dairy cows to evaluate the effect of displacement abomasum on mineral status, energy metabolism and liver function. Samples were collected from 60 affected cows and 60 healthy control cows matched with cases, based on herd, parity, and stage of lactation. Concen...

(1)H-Nuclear Magnetic Resonance-Based Plasma Metabolic Profiling of Dairy Cows with Fatty Liver.

Fatty liver is a common metabolic disorder of dairy cows during the transition period. Historically, the diagnosis of fatty liver has involved liver biopsy, biochemical or histological examination of liver specimens, and ultrasonographic imaging of the liver. However, more convenient and noninvasive methods would be beneficial for the diagnosis of fatty liver in dairy cows. The plasma metabolic...
